How Litchfield Park Hotels Got Their Start

In 1910, Litchfield Park offered a wide-open desert landscape that was attractive to coyotes, lizards and outdoor enthusiasts. To the east, the budding City of Phoenix was selling downtown commercial property for about $20.00 a parcel. In Akron, Ohio, the 12-year-old GoodYear Tire & Rubber Company was producing the Paul W. Litchfield patented no-tube rubber tires that were reinforced with cotton. Superintendent Litchfield had been on staff with the Ohio GoodYear Tire Company for about 8-years in 1910.

Between 1910 and 1914, there was a decline in global cotton production due to plant pests in the fields. The GoodYear Tire & Rubber Company was quickly becoming the largest tire manufacturer on the planet; a manufacturer who needed more cotton to keep up with the new World War I demands for tires and rubber products. Cotton grows in sunny places with sandy soils. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggested the sandy soils in the Phoenix area as a good location for GoodYear to host their cotton fields.

In 1916, Paul Litchfield was sent to the Phoenix area to convince local farmers to grow cotton crops for GoodYear. When the local farmers balked, Paul Litchfield purchased 16,000 acres of land for the company. By 1918, a lodging house was erected on the land for the GoodYear executives and suppliers to use. Today, this lodging house has grown and modernized into a lavish 331-room desert oasis.
